Sanae is Nagisa's mother. Normally, she's very childish and often acts like a cry-baby, but when the situation demands it, she can be strong-willed and reliable. She operates the Furukawa Bakery alongside her husband, Akio. Sanae frequently experiments with unusual bread recipes that end up being inedible and unsold. Outside of the bakery, she tutors children. She takes pride in her youthful appearance, which often leads people to mistake her for Nagisa's older sister. In After Story, Sanae plays a more significant role, frequently assisting Tomoya when Nagisa is unwell and needs accompaniment, especially during Nagisa's pregnancy. Prior to working at the Furukawa Bakery, Sanae was a junior-high teacher but had to leave her job due to Nagisa's health issues. She orchestrated Tomoya and Ushio's trip to the flower cape, hoping it would help them reconcile. Sanae knows Shino, Tomoya's paternal grandmother, although it's never revealed how they met. After Nagisa's passing, Sanae, along with Akio, takes care of Ushio.
