Queen Beryl is the first major villain in every version of the Sailor Moon series, named after the mineral beryl. She possesses immense magical power, most of which she uses to channel life energy harvested by her servants to Queen Metaria, an entity requiring this energy.
In the manga, Beryl was originally a beautiful girl on Earth during the Silver Millennium era. She fell in love with Prince Endymion, but her feelings were unreciprocated. Discovering him with Princess Serenity of the moon shattered her. This betrayal drove her to ally with Queen Metaria, an evil force from the sun. Corrupted and empowered by Metaria, Beryl incited war against the Moon Kingdom, leading to the deaths of both Prince Endymion and Princess Serenity. Sailor Venus eventually killed Beryl with the holy moon sword. Afterward, Queen Serenity sealed away Metaria and reincarnated her kingdom on Earth. In the 20th century, Beryl re-emerged as the Queen of the Dark Kingdom, commanding reincarnated generals Jadeite, Nephrite, Zoisite, and Kunzite to locate the Silver Crystal and defeat the Sailor Soldiers. Ultimately, she failed and was again killed by Sailor Venus.
In the anime, Queen Beryl orchestrates various attacks on Tokyo while Sailor Moon and other Sailor Soldiers search for the Moon Princess. She kidnaps and brainwashes Prince Endymion to kill his lover. When he breaks free and confronts her, Beryl seeks more power from Queen Metaria, becoming her vessel for Earth's destruction. Sailor Moon, transformed into Princess Serenity, defeats them using the combined powers of the Silver Crystal and the Moon Stick.
The manga portrays Beryl in a more tragic light, showing brief moments of regret as she realizes she cannot turn back. In contrast, the English-dubbed anime omits her origin story, only referring to her as the ruler of the Negaverse, an evil alternate dimension. Upon her defeat, she is merely banished back to the Negaverse.
