Naoyuki is Tomoya's father. Tomoya's mother, Atsuko Okazaki, passed away when Tomoya was young, leaving Naoyuki to raise him alone. Following this tragedy, Naoyuki turned to alcohol and smoking, often engaging in fights with his son. During one argument over trivial matters, Naoyuki pushed Tomoya against the wall, dislocating Tomoya's right shoulder. After this incident, Tomoya refused to leave his room, and by the time he sought medical help, the injury was deemed untreatable. Since then, Naoyuki has treated Tomoya more kindly, but in a manner that felt distant rather than familial. This estrangement hurt Tomoya deeply, leading him to become a delinquent. Unable to participate in basketball anymore, Tomoya avoided coming home early to evade confrontations with his father. He even considered running away from home, as hinted in Kotomi's storyline. In the After Story arc, Shino's account reveals that despite his depression following his wife's death, Naoyuki sacrificed everything for Tomoya's sake, hoping he would grow into a responsible adult unlike himself. Once Tomoya reconciles with his father, Naoyuki decides to return to his hometown to live with his mother, feeling his role as a father has concluded. In the Clannad movie, Naoyuki works night shifts instead of staying home and drinking. He shows concern for his relationship with Tomoya and tries to alleviate his son's depression to prevent him from following in his footsteps.
