A very shy girl who communicates solely through text messages on her cell phone; she exhibits notably vicious behavior in her emails. Her family name, Otonashi, translates to "soundless," and her given name is derived from the loan word "mail." Her email address, "hazukashigariyasan," means "full of shyness." Her father affectionately calls her "MeruMeru." Apart from a few faint sounds and squeaks, she is virtually mute, and any attempt to speak results in uncontrollable sputtering in a horrific language. Her family appears absurdly wealthy, as her father can arrange auditions for people to dub her voice in real time. In the anime, her voice actress changes each episode and is selected randomly, credited with at most a short sequence of nonsensical characters, except for episode six of Zoku, where she is voiced by Chiwa Saito.
