A student in Kira's art club plays a pivotal role in the second volume's plot. He possesses significant technical skill as an artist but, as Rei notes, his work lacks emotional depth. This critique hits a nerve with Kurasawa, who is struggling with a lack of inspiration. Feeling immense pressure to excel in an upcoming citywide art competition, he steals Kira's drawing of a mother and child to use as the basis for his painting. After winning the competition, Kira confronts him, but he brushes off her accusations, claiming it was just a coincidence. Enraged, Rei assaults him in his classroom, attempting to break his fingers, but Kira intervenes. After Kira pleads with him to return her drawing so she can complete her painting for Rei, Kurasawa understands its importance and leaves it on her easel in the art club room. He apologizes to Rei, explaining his reasons for stealing the artwork. Later, overwhelmed by guilt and despair, he attempts suicide by jumping off the school roof. He survives but requires extensive recovery time and does not return to school.
