Kou Yaten often comes across as distant and cynical. He doesn't enjoy socializing or participating in sports. His remarks tend to be sharp and blunt, which further isolates him from others. In one episode, the other Starlights criticize Yaten for his behavior, fearing it might lose them fans. However, he gets along well with Luna, who inspires him to continue fighting at one point.
In the anime, Yaten has the highest spiritual awareness among the Starlights and can sense when Starseeds are taken by Sailor Galaxia. He views humans as untrustworthy and is eager to find Princess Kakyuu so they can leave Earth quickly. This attitude becomes more pronounced when they discover that Usagi is Sailor Moon. Yaten believes Seiya should stay away from Usagi, despite the shared wish of Princess Kakyuu and the Guardian Senshi for everyone to work together. His perspective is shared by Taiki and Sailors Uranus and Neptune.
