Kenji is the father of the protagonist Usagi Tsukino, also known as Sailor Moon. Like his wife Ikuko, Kenji is completely unaware of Usagi's true identity. He fits the stereotype of a well-meaning Japanese salaryman, working initially as a magazine reporter and later becoming an editor-in-chief. Kenji is quite affectionate towards his wife. Early in the series, he becomes very upset when he sees Usagi with Mamoru Chiba.
In the manga, it is noted that Kenji is the only family member who notices the similarities between Sailor Moon and Usagi. He senses a newfound maturity in his daughter when she discovers her identity as Princess Serenity, and at times he remarks on her serene beauty.
