Kanako is a fifth-grade student in Shūichi's class at the start of Hōrō Musuko. People call her Sasa-chan as a nickname, but her younger brother and Chizuru also refer to her as Kanabun. Although she makes her first appearance in chapter two of the manga, her name isn't revealed until volume two. She is a petite, energetic girl who sees herself as everyone's friend and gets easily upset when her friends have conflicts. During such times, Kanako tries to mediate between them, ensuring no one feels left out. She has been friends with Yoshino since preschool, and later becomes close with Chizuru when they enter junior high school. Kanako appears as an innocent, childlike girl whose main concerns are her friends' disputes. Her mother often finds her challenging, having to choose her clothes and even help her prepare for school in the mornings. Kanako once mentioned that thinking too hard about something makes her brain feel itchy.
