Berthier, known as Bertie in the English versions and sometimes implied to be Birdy, is the second-youngest sister in the original version and the youngest in the dub. Her name originates from the French mineral berthierite and is pronounced roughly as "BEAR-tyay." Her magical attack is called "Dark Water," and she serves as a counterpart to Ami Mizuno. Unlike her sisters, she does not have romantic feelings for Rubeus but fears him. In the manga, Berthier is tasked with "Code002, Operation Re-move" to eliminate the Sailor Senshi and capture Chibiusa. Disguised as a human, she impresses people with her dowsing skills using a pendulum. Upon witnessing Ami Mizuno locate a water leak without a pendulum, Berthier deduces Ami's identity as Sailor Mercury. Skilled at chess, Berthier challenges Ami to a televised match. During the game, she reveals Ami's true identity and attempts to use the Black Crystal to manipulate and capture her. A battle ensues involving Berthier, Mercury, Jupiter, and Moon. Berthier demonstrates considerable power by deflecting Mercury's Shine Snow Illusion attack. Ultimately, she uses sewer water to trap and choke Mercury, enabling Rubeus to abduct her. Berthier is subsequently defeated by Sailor Moon. In the anime, Berthier exhibits a darkly playful personality and shows deep respect for her siblings. She is notably upset when Cooan is purified by the Silver Crystal. Similar to her counterpart Ami, she is a strategist and excels at chess, though she cheats. On her final mission, Berthier engages Sailor Mercury in a deadly chess match. However, her plan to freeze them all fails when Petz and Calaveras arrive, claiming credit for any success she achieves. Distracted, she loses her chance to deliver the killing blow against Sailor Mercury when Tuxedo Mask intervenes and rescues her and the other Sailor Senshi. Abandoned by her older sisters, Berthier decides to sacrifice herself to kill the Sailor Senshi, using all her power ("Dark Water! Full Power!") in one final blizzard. However, a newly healed Cooan convinces her that she is still loved and has a second chance. Berthier relents in her suicidal attempt and allows Sailor Moon to heal her. Later, she and Cooan join forces with the Sailor Senshi to convince their other two sisters to join them and live as normal women.
