What makes this story particularly engaging is how well their charades progress, eventually leading to a touching moment where they worry about each other's future despite their initial perceptions. The MC believes ML has no academic prospects, while ML secretly helps the MC by anonymously sending review materials. In turn, ML surprises MC with study materials left on his desk, creating an endearing exchange of support.
Both main characters have compelling reasons for their actions, reflecting the earnestness and sacrifices of adolescence. The supporting cast, including friends, family, and even rivals, are portrayed as supportive and often humorous, adding depth to the story without resorting to villainy. Instead, they embody the complexities of human relationships.
Reading this book is a delightful distraction during a period of waiting for a strong typhoon to pass. I sincerely hope the translator continues to deliver such a captivating and well-rounded translation.
In a heartfelt moment, ML gently apologized, "Dear, forgive me, don't hurt me. I didn't mean those words," which marked the beginning of their intriguing connection.
The supporting cast was delightful, particularly the Class 3 students who initially feared the main characters but later became close friends, and my favorite, Old Tang. Everyone needs a teacher like Old Tang –无私 and kind, persistently believing in every student, no matter how challenging they may seem. The portrayal of the bond in "Black Water Street" was heartwarming.
While the story was overall pleasing, a few chapters felt monotonous, necessitating some skimming. If you're a fan of rom-coms with well-balanced main characters and minimal angst, this is definitely a must-read. I'd rate it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
I particularly appreciate characters like Xie Yu, a seemingly aloof yet inherently kind-hearted protagonist, and He Zhao, a seemingly confident yet tenderhearted love interest. The novel masterfully conveys the message to cherish the joy, sorrow, laughter, and tears of youth, as well as the bittersweet moments that fleeting time brings. Time may march on, but memories linger, waiting to be revisited through retrospection.
In describing this book, I would sum it up as "The Beauty of Adolescence." Initially reluctant to venture beyond the original chapters, I found myself emotionally invested, reluctant to let the story end. Indeed, it provided late-night catharsis, filled with laughter and tears, much like a teenager. Though the novel concludes, for Xie Yu and He Zhao, their life journey is just beginning.
I'll surely miss these characters and look forward to revisiting their story in the future.
The storytelling is simple yet lighthearted, which is a welcome change from more intense narratives. I particularly appreciated the chemistry and growth between the protagonist and their love interest. The supporting characters are omnipresent, which, while providing a rich tapestry, occasionally felt a tad overwhelming.
The male lead exhibits a gentle demeanor, while the female protagonist is strong and quiet, showcasing their own unique badass qualities. Overall, it's a well-rounded story that resonates with the everyday experiences and relationships we often see in life.
